Throat cancer

Throat

Throat cancer arises when abnormal cells in the throat, larynx (voice box) or tonsils grow out of control, and form tumors. While incidence and mortality rates for this type of cancer have declined in recent decades, cancers of the throat associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are on the rise, particularly among men. Researchers look forward to increased awareness and new and innovative treatment options, helping more patients survive the disease and increasing their quality of life. For example, versatile robotic surgery is a minimally invasive treatment option that can result in some patients with head and neck cancer healing more quickly. Drugs for immunotherapy, such as checkpoint inhibitors, are used to treat certain cases of advanced squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck. These are among the variety of treatment options available for patients with cancer of the throat, where multidisciplinary teams of cancer specialists work together to tailor tailored treatment plans to each patient's needs
