Multiple myeloma

Multiple-myeloma

Multiple myeloma is cancer in the plasma cells that grow. Plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found mostly in the bone marrow, help the immune system fend off infection by producing antibodies that help kill germs. When cancer grows in these cells, it causes an excess of abnormal plasma cells, which form tumors in multiple locations throughout the bone marrow and crowd out and prevent the production of normal blood cells. This often results in low blood counts, which impairs the body's ability to combat infection. Generally speaking, the illness does not cause symptoms until it has advanced, so it usually is not treated until it has spread. Our multidisciplinary health care team of medical oncologists, hematologists, and supportive care providers work together to diagnose the disease reliably, in a timely manner, and clarify the treatment options available to you, so you can make more informed care decisions.
